Brunton AXIS Transit, Azimuth (0-360°)

Engineered by geologists for geologists! The lid of this transit rotates around the major axis and minor axis of the body to provide a multitude of measuring capabilities. The transit’s hollow hinge doubles as a sighting tube and allows for intuitive, accurate measurement of planes, lines, bearings, and vertical angles. Only one measurement configuration is necessary to determine strike and dip, trend and plunge, and bearing and vertical angle. Compass North is oriented parallel to the main hinge axis, making the AXIS the only transit capable of measuring strike and dip simultaneously through contact or sighting methods. The special lid protractor and 360° rotation around the minor axis provide accurate, concurrent trend and plunge measurements on any surface - even overhangs! The AXIS is equipped with a circular level for horizontal leveling and two long levels for ease of leveling from the sides or bottom. Other features include a needle locking mechanism, induction dampening for fast stabilization, and magnetic declination adjustment for east or west declination settings to ±180°. The AXIS is machined from 6061 T6 Aluminum Billet and features O-rings for waterproof protection. One-year manufacturer’s warranty. Made in the USA.

Bought this transit over a year ago and very happy I did. Well worth the extra expense considering how quickly and precisely it takes structural measurements. I had used a Brunton Geo previously but the Axis is much more advanced and makes the geo obsolete due to its double rotating lid.

I purchased the Axis transit in March and have to say it’s really incredible! I am out in the field for much of the year and take lots of analog measurements. I converted from my old Brunton to a German Breithaupt transit a few years back and it worked well but I must say it doesn’t even come close to the functionality and ease of the Axis! Sighting is easier, the needle dampens very quickly, and the two axis construction is genius for measuring angles! The Axis has also held up well from field use and will continue to serve me well for years to come I’m sure.

Someone purchased this Axis transit on behalf of me from Forestry Suppliers. Being in my senior year of college, this was a necessity. I have used both the traditional Brunton and the Axis, and I highly recommend the Axis over the traditional one. It's much easier to take strike and dip measurements in the field. It's also much easier taking bearings and using the clinometer than on the standard Brunton. I'm still getting used to it and learning all of its hidden features, but so far it's been great and has saved me a lot of time. I am really glad I have this. Highly recommend for any college student or professional.

I purchased the Axis in the quad version a little over a year ago and can't recommend it enough. I take a lot of structural measurements in the field and can definitely say that it allows you to collect data faster than the conventional Brunton that I've had for years without any sacrifice in accuracy. The way the two-axis hinge/lid works is very interesting and makes total sense once you use it. It’s a time saver when measuring numerous trend and plunge and strike/dip/dip direction measurements and the lid is amazing for extending planes on the outcrop. You don’t have to adjust the lever and clinometer level on the inside when in contact with the outcrop anymore. It also has a really high-end needle that dampens quickly and can be set to be locked when hiking and then switched off with the lever on the bottom. The Axis feels really solid and well-built, and after lots of measurements and really getting banged around in the field mine only has minor dings and scratches.

This transit is fantastic! It has significantly reduced the time it takes to do field measurements, personally and for my students. Strike and dip are taken at the same time and trend and plunge can be measured simultaneously and even on overhangs! A real game changer - I have even tried some of the more expensive european transits and the Axis is superior because of how the hinge rotates and measures angles at any orientation. Geology students prefer measuring in the field with the axis to other older Bruntons because it is direct reading and far more intuitive. Highly recommended.
